Target Extra Credit UKC 100

1) When i visited Target i was wondering what artifact can i find to take a picture of, the first that really stood out for me are the books. I didn't Target was selling books too, they all kinds of books starting from history and ending in healthy human lifestyle. For the consumerism part Target did a great job by just selling books because it will just bring them more money, also for the idea that people don't always have to go to the bookstore to buy a book they may find the same book in Target for cheaper price. As for design features, as you can see the books i am standing next are all for women so they are mainly for women but they did have books for guys too.
2) Target had some UK gear as well and surprising this is how much they only had. UK blue is everywhere and Target i think does a good job by advertising new UK gear that's not really expensive at all. For consumerism, since this city is know because of our school and basketball team Target sells the t-shirts because they represent our whole city. As for design, like i talked previously the color of blue represents our city and the picture below has mostly blue in it. The t-shirts are designed to look the same and what i mean by that is the UK logo is always on the front.
3) I was surprised when i learned that target is selling cellphones like iPhone and giving our careers. The iPhone is an Apple made product so for to be sold at the Target shows how big the store Target has become not only clothing wise but electronically. Right now every second person in this world has an iPhone they say and for to be sold at a store like Target shows that anybody can get an iPhone these days you just have to work for it and that was the consumerism part. As for design, iPhone design to be easy to use and easy to carry around, simplicity is beautiful.
 4) I decided to take a picture of a Target had cart because it tells a lot about the store it self. The hand cart is red because the Target color is red and it represents many other things to it. The logo of Target in front of the hand cart represents that this thing belongs to this store. The hand carts are designed for people that aren't going to buy whole lot of stuff when they visit the store, so it can be use for quick shopping. For consumerism this hand carts of Target have contributed a lot to their economy because they made the process of shopping faster and safer. As for design the hand cart is designed to be light and easy to carry with a handle.
5) Lastly i took a picture of some headphones, they are not regular they are all made by the company called beats by dr. drey. As you can see those headphones are not very usual and you cant find them at any store. But when i sow these at Target i was surprised because those beats cost a lot and for a store like Target to be selling them makes me want to do all my shopping there. For consumerism these headphones have a big name, the rapper Dr. Drey is the one who came up with them and every young adult in this society wants one of those because of their name. As for design those headphones are designed to prevent the outside noise get mixed with the music.

Summary as in Social Media 4/14/14 Presentations.

Today's presentations were mostly about cars and it was really interesting to learn how there are many car brands that are unknown. Cars are a big thing that is represented in social  media, for example when we watch Superbowl ever year the commercials are sponsored most of the time by car companies like Infinity and Volkswagen. In today's presentations most of the cars were not well know but they had their name up there in the commercials and i think that they are represented a lot in the social media like in the picture above. Twitter arguably is the most used social site by people and the private corporations and the owners most of the time advertise their cars through social media because that's the place people visit the most and put updates.

Summary of the Presentations on 4/11/14

Most of the presentations were mainly about stadiums and sports organizations. There is not a word that will describe all of them but the closest ones would be building and sport arenas/stadiums. There were couple of baseball stadiums which had a lot of information about them, the structure and how it was build. Some professional baseball stadiums and college softball park of women's UK team. The arenas were very interesting specially the Rupp Arena, the presenter had a lot of information that i did not know about our arena and it was overall an awesome video. The second arena was the Miami Heat's Arena the American Airlines Arena, i learned many things from that presentation as well which related to Rupp Arena and how almost all arenas have the same structure. Finally the Emirates Stadium of Arsenal located in England, as a soccer player i thought this was a really good presentation to inform the students of the soccer stadiums. Overall all of the presentations were very informative and made me learn knew stuff that i did not know before. The presenters that made a video were more entertaining and kept my interest alive.

NCUR Experience Looking for Design Around You 4/5/14

Research Topic: Formulation and Long-Term Stability of Enzyme Layers for Bio-sensors
This two guys from Eastern Kentucky University are researching about Enzymes. It was not a big presentation but they explained me everything they were trying to find out about Human enzymes. Now somebody might wonder how enzymes are related or correlated with design, well this two guys took enzymes and put them in to three different atmospheres, one of them is room temperature, fridge, outside and any place with an unusual temperature. The way i connected the design ideas to this research topic is how the room can affect the changes on enzymes. If the room is very small and it's considered to be the regular room, the size of the room will eventually effect the results on enzymes and this is what the guy were looking for is how the different temperature and the size of a room will have the effect on human enzymes. As you can see the poster in the picture above has a big sign that says "chemistry" and their topic has a lot to do with chemistry which i related to the design ideas and how it will affect the results. I think that the size of the rooms will affect the results because not all the rooms are designed the same and they will have a significant effect of the enzymes. Overall it was a great learning process and meeting these two guys from the picture, it was awesome because they were very knowledgeable and i feel like they have a bright future ahead of them in this field. They told me that a company from Canada introduced them to this research topic and they are working for them.

Turkish Money Bill/ Defining Culture and Subculture

Since I am from Turkey i chose to do this assignment on the Turkish 200 Lira bill, Lira is just a name and the value of the money. So 200 Lira represents many things of Turkish culture, first in the picture is Kemal Ataturk who was a very successful army officer and in memory of him Turkish federation prints his picture on almost all of the money bills of Turkey. It represents the power and the will to remember the people that fought in the war to protect their nation. The bill it self also relates to the of flag of Turkey which has a star and mostly the red color with a white star. The bill can represent and relate to many things at the same time but the most important cultural idea that it represents is the idea of Turkish people being always together and most importantly the respect.

The counter culture or the subculture that 200 Lira bill represents is the market. The idea of how this bill can dominate the market of trade and stocks. It is know worldwide that Turkish Federation has a good background in the market industry and the deals with other nations. The counter culture idea that this bill represents of Turkey is being the nationality that cares about their past and present people, being from Turkey i know how this nation was represented in many occasions and one of the was is the money bills. Money goes from one hand to another and for to remain its respect Turkish Federation has put our flag colors and our great leader.

Movie Analysis Ravil Askarov

MOVIE ANALYSIS
So far in the class we have been learning that design is everywhere and people sometimes don’t realize that everything around us have been designed. To understand the idea that everything around us is designed, we watched the following movies Helvetica, Wall-E, and Everything is illuminated. In all those movies design was used and incorporated well into the scenes of the movie, designed was used well to get the main paints of the movie across. Helvetica the first movie I watched, was simply a documentary about font that is used in everyday life, and how it became to be the most popular font these days in business industries and etc. One important thing about Helvetica font, that it’s not included in the Microsoft Office Word. Wall-e as I refer to that movie as an animation movie, is Pixar film that uses design in order to help rely the hidden message of the movie, the idea of hidden message come from the movie itself because there is no talking in the first 40 minutes, the characters are construction vehicles that are like robots. Everything is illuminated is a bit different than the ones above, the movie starts off with a story that was kind a sad to me. The movie ends on a serious note as well, throughout the movie the designed is used a lot to incorporate the design and the most important thing about the movie is that people collect everything good the find. In all those three movies above, design is used in different ways to effectively communicate the message to the viewers. All three movie were enjoyable to watch and the idea of design in those movies is endless.

Helvetica, like mentioned above is a 90 minute documentary that focuses and discusses the font Helvetica itself. Helvetica movie shows how the font affects our lives in different ways, it makes us reflect on thousands of words we see every day. The design of the letters in this font is very simple and many business industries use this font for example UPS. Designers of this font were asked to share their ideas on how the came up with this font and how did it become so popular these days. Throughout the movie people that came up with Helvetica font were interviewed and the common idea was that Helvetica font is very powerful and due to its widely used by companies. This font allows the words to be powerful in many ways, this font also allows to communicate the message effectively to an audience. Due to its simplicity this font is almost used in every (papers, store name, electronic stores, and in regular markets). Helvetica is a powerful font in many ways, the idea that its used by common ground use and it popular worldwide.

Wall-e, is an animated film about a small robot. A robot who is left on the Earth by himself to clean up the planet after people who have been residing in space, so that they can return to their homes. People that go to space, they hardly move and mostly they sit and discuss the issues that are happening on the world and how to prevent it, this idea relates to Wall-e because he is the one that has to do the actual work after people. Wall-e spends his time on Earth by going through trash cans and sort them, Wall-e also collects some of the objects that he finds among the piles of junk. Throughout the movie we see that Wall-e is not the only one on earth, when another robot arrives named EVE at the scene. EVE was sent by the humans from space, to collect any signs of life for the captain the earth is safe place to reside in again. Wall-e quickly becomes friends with EVE and falls in love with her. A passion that humans live in the space have forgotten the people on earth. Wall-e gives EVE plants, to show the signs of life and it cases EVE’s entire system to go down. In the movie we saw that both Wall-e and EVE struggled in the space to bring the humans back on earth, which cause for a fight to break down between the robots living in the spaceship. Wall-e ends up winning the fight and humans are w=able to come back to earth. The message someone can get from this movie is that we need to stop polluting the Earth. Based on this movie we can see that technology is affecting the world in many ways, even though Wall-e was a robot he had feelings of love for EVE. Humans these days interact through social media and that why we see that technology caused people to distance themselves from one another. This also relates to design since design is becoming more and more common as design gets more and more advanced.

Everything is illuminated, is a movie about a Jewish family, in particular it’s about a young Jew, Jonathan who is in search of a women who save his Grandfather during the Holocaust. He doesn’t have many evidence of whom the person is, the only clue he has is a photo of a women named Augustine that his Grandma gives him before she dies. Jonathan asks a young man named Alex for help to search for the women in the picture that helped his Grandpa during the Holocaust. Alex’s grandpa drives them to the Trachimbrod and the find Lista, Augustine’s sister. At this point Jonathan found most of what he was looking for but not the main person and they learn that Alex’s Grandpa was a Nazi and executed Jews. Alex’s grandpa commits a suicide by the end of the movie, because he couldn’t live with the guilt of pain anymore because he caused so many Jews to die during the war and Holocaust. In this movie design is incorporated in several different ways. All through his life Jonathan collects the artifacts and sample of places he has been. Jonathan keeps the objects most people would quickly forget about and throw them away. This story teaches people a good lesson the past is relevant to who we are and what we have yet to become or became. Design relates to this whole film and the story behind it because we can’t seek for the improvement in design if we do not take the past into the consideration and recognize that history is necessary to improve.

Each movie has different aspects to them but they all seem to have same themes which is design. In all three movie, the past is the key to creating a brighter future in term of design and trust of society. It is important to understand that how far the value of design from each movie came to its value today. Helvetica a documentary about a font, begins from a different idea from other movies it begins with the idea that it’s used in everyday life, example business industries etc. it’s the font that is really simple and easy to recognize, designers are focused on how this font won’t become to mainstream. Wall-e is a movie that focused on bringing the people back to earth from space. This movie however teaches that design is powerful in different ways, in meaning that possibilities for design are endless. The story behind this movie is that we need to take advantage of new technologies to get caught up with the easier way of doing things. In the last movie Everything is Illuminated, Jonathan shows the importance of little things in life when he uses something as small as old picture of the person that saved his grandpa.

All three movie demonstrate different ways of how our past depends on some things in life, like new technology that continues to improve. Possibilities that one font can change the whole view we have on the names of things. The other being a children’s movie, and last but not least being a story of a Jewish boy. After examining the design in all those movies, it is easy to see the common lesson we learned in class that everything around us is designed. Time is the most important essence and it is important to live the present and appreciate the past when it comes to having a bright future just like in those movies.

CONTEXT

William T. Young Library opened April 3, 1998. Library is named for William T. Young, a prominent local businessman, horse breeder, philanthropist and alumnus of the university, who began fund raising efforts with a donation of $5 million. The facility serves as a central library for the university's social sciences, humanities and life sciences collections and acts as a federal depository and a public library for the state of Kentucky. It holds the record among public universities in the nation for the largest book endowment. Mr. Young's gift of $5 million kicked off a fund-raising campaign that raised $21 million. A 1939 mechanical engineering graduate of UK, William Young's businesses included Big Top Peanut Butter and W. T. Young Storage. His thoroughbred horses included 1996 Kentucky Derby winner Grindstone. The construction begun in 1994, the total money spent for this project is $58 million, the biggest project that University of Kentucky ever built. Mr. Young focused on the building being the biggest, not in height but width, the idea of the building being the biggest in United States. The library is visible from many places, for example to get the best view of the library, if you stand right in front of the Chemistry-Physics building, you will see the two wide paths and a library name, in my opinion that's where you can the best view of the library and obviously the front of the library too.
View of WTY Library from the Rose Street

WTY library can be compared to a lot of building on campus, in Lexington and across the nation. One particular building that stood out for me is the Lexington Public Library, this library is not as tall as the WTY library however they have the same design of the walls from inside and the color used which is mainly white and little bit yellow. The circulation desk is different in the public library because it stands in the middle and in WTY library the circulation desk is located on the sides of the sides of the walls. The design of the buildings from outside is really not similar but the inside is very similar because the study areas are located on the sides of the walls in both libraries.

Knowledge is known to be the foundation of humanity and development. Libraries are considered to be temples of knowledge. Given that William T Young library is the second biggest library in the country I take pride in it and I try to use this valuable asset as much as I can. I think that UK students are lucky to have access to this great investment and should appreciate it. In my opinion W.T.Y library is the masterpiece and symbol of UK given the structural (interior, exterior) design.

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR
Design Features
William T Young library I think serves as one of the most important icons of the university because it’s the biggest building on campus and it’s really wide. WTY library can almost be seen from anywhere on the campus. Mr. Young had an idea to design a building that could serve as an icon and the idea of being big and stand out from rest of the buildings. The exterior of the library was designed by Kallmann McKinnell and Wood Architects of Boston in association with Nolan and Nolan of Louisville. The construction cost was $58 million. Its exterior features a unique octagonal shape, two-story brick-and-stone arcades on each façade and two-story windows. When it comes to interior design, our library is the only library in the country to house all of its volumes on mobile compact shelves which are controlled by the push of a bottom. This innovative method of storing thousands of books is a relatively small amount of space freed room for work place, study halls and reading rooms. The lobby features Treuchtlingen marble mined from southern Germany. The layout of the interior is reminiscent of a building within a building concept, with a center atrium that houses the administration area on the first floor. When it comes to culture and people from different backgrounds, WTY has national flags of almost every country and supports the diversity, since this campus is very diverse.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The history of WTY library dates back to 1970s when then University President Otis A. In 1990, then-President Charles Wethington pledged to the faculty and students that building a new library would be top priority. The University initiated a massive fund-raising campaign in 1991, the university raised $21.5 million with the help of local businessman who donated $5 million. In 1992 the university received state approval to build the library and spend the money they raised. In 1994, construction began on the new library. The site’s location was a high spot between two sinkholes, which required the burying of 202 steel reinforced concrete caissons into the soil to prevent the structure from sinking. It is the most expensive construction project in the University of Kentucky’s history. The deed at the ceremony was handed over from the Alumni Association to the university.

DETAILS
William T Young library is one of the biggest building on campus if not the biggest building on University of Kentucky campus, Young library is very well secured during the daylight as well as at night. Students are required to show their IDs after 10:00 P.M for security purposes. University of Kentucky focuses a lot on safety for students because its the number one priority. Library offers a lot of opportunities for students to get jobs at the circulation desks, library also allows some professor  to teach classes at the basement of the library. Everyone that comes to the Young library benefits somehow because what every students do they do something productive. Library has 24/7 workers who help students to look for the books they need for classes. Library has a website where students can do research for their classes, the way the website works is students look up the books by their name or author name and each book in the library has a number that students can search by. Library has all the tools students need to be successful in their courses, whether its books, computers or assistance for research. Library features a lot design ideas from outside and inside because the rocks inside of the library on the floor are from Germany. The outside of the library features a lot of stuff, the bricks and the symmetry of the library is very unique due to the color of the brick and its relation to the other buildings on campus.

Ravil Askarov UKC 100 Blog "Water Bottle"

I chose to write about this water bottle because i use this one everyday and its my favorite. Sometimes i take my workout supplements in this bottle. i think the big issue in this world right now is recycling the plastic or other stuff made out out of glass or metal too. The unique thing about this water bottle is that it has a place to get a better grip on the bottle, also it easy to carry this bottle around.
“There are 42 million plastic bottles that go into landfills in North Carolina alone,” says Dirtball founder Joe Fox. “And our brand launched with t-shirts, socks, polos, hoodies, sweatshirts and a whole line using plastic bottles in our fabric, but we decided to kick up our game. Besides, everyone loves jeans.” This statistic came from a recent article posted by New York times, and its hard to believe that the jeans that we wear are made from plastic bottles.
