Movie Analysis Ravil Askarov

MOVIE ANALYSIS
So far in the class we have been learning that design is everywhere and people sometimes don’t realize that everything around us have been designed. To understand the idea that everything around us is designed, we watched the following movies Helvetica, Wall-E, and Everything is illuminated. In all those movies design was used and incorporated well into the scenes of the movie, designed was used well to get the main paints of the movie across. Helvetica the first movie I watched, was simply a documentary about font that is used in everyday life, and how it became to be the most popular font these days in business industries and etc. One important thing about Helvetica font, that it’s not included in the Microsoft Office Word. Wall-e as I refer to that movie as an animation movie, is Pixar film that uses design in order to help rely the hidden message of the movie, the idea of hidden message come from the movie itself because there is no talking in the first 40 minutes, the characters are construction vehicles that are like robots. Everything is illuminated is a bit different than the ones above, the movie starts off with a story that was kind a sad to me. The movie ends on a serious note as well, throughout the movie the designed is used a lot to incorporate the design and the most important thing about the movie is that people collect everything good the find. In all those three movies above, design is used in different ways to effectively communicate the message to the viewers. All three movie were enjoyable to watch and the idea of design in those movies is endless.

Helvetica, like mentioned above is a 90 minute documentary that focuses and discusses the font Helvetica itself. Helvetica movie shows how the font affects our lives in different ways, it makes us reflect on thousands of words we see every day. The design of the letters in this font is very simple and many business industries use this font for example UPS. Designers of this font were asked to share their ideas on how the came up with this font and how did it become so popular these days. Throughout the movie people that came up with Helvetica font were interviewed and the common idea was that Helvetica font is very powerful and due to its widely used by companies. This font allows the words to be powerful in many ways, this font also allows to communicate the message effectively to an audience. Due to its simplicity this font is almost used in every (papers, store name, electronic stores, and in regular markets). Helvetica is a powerful font in many ways, the idea that its used by common ground use and it popular worldwide.

Wall-e, is an animated film about a small robot. A robot who is left on the Earth by himself to clean up the planet after people who have been residing in space, so that they can return to their homes. People that go to space, they hardly move and mostly they sit and discuss the issues that are happening on the world and how to prevent it, this idea relates to Wall-e because he is the one that has to do the actual work after people. Wall-e spends his time on Earth by going through trash cans and sort them, Wall-e also collects some of the objects that he finds among the piles of junk. Throughout the movie we see that Wall-e is not the only one on earth, when another robot arrives named EVE at the scene. EVE was sent by the humans from space, to collect any signs of life for the captain the earth is safe place to reside in again. Wall-e quickly becomes friends with EVE and falls in love with her. A passion that humans live in the space have forgotten the people on earth. Wall-e gives EVE plants, to show the signs of life and it cases EVE’s entire system to go down. In the movie we saw that both Wall-e and EVE struggled in the space to bring the humans back on earth, which cause for a fight to break down between the robots living in the spaceship. Wall-e ends up winning the fight and humans are w=able to come back to earth. The message someone can get from this movie is that we need to stop polluting the Earth. Based on this movie we can see that technology is affecting the world in many ways, even though Wall-e was a robot he had feelings of love for EVE. Humans these days interact through social media and that why we see that technology caused people to distance themselves from one another. This also relates to design since design is becoming more and more common as design gets more and more advanced.

Everything is illuminated, is a movie about a Jewish family, in particular it’s about a young Jew, Jonathan who is in search of a women who save his Grandfather during the Holocaust. He doesn’t have many evidence of whom the person is, the only clue he has is a photo of a women named Augustine that his Grandma gives him before she dies. Jonathan asks a young man named Alex for help to search for the women in the picture that helped his Grandpa during the Holocaust. Alex’s grandpa drives them to the Trachimbrod and the find Lista, Augustine’s sister. At this point Jonathan found most of what he was looking for but not the main person and they learn that Alex’s Grandpa was a Nazi and executed Jews. Alex’s grandpa commits a suicide by the end of the movie, because he couldn’t live with the guilt of pain anymore because he caused so many Jews to die during the war and Holocaust. In this movie design is incorporated in several different ways. All through his life Jonathan collects the artifacts and sample of places he has been. Jonathan keeps the objects most people would quickly forget about and throw them away. This story teaches people a good lesson the past is relevant to who we are and what we have yet to become or became. Design relates to this whole film and the story behind it because we can’t seek for the improvement in design if we do not take the past into the consideration and recognize that history is necessary to improve.

Each movie has different aspects to them but they all seem to have same themes which is design. In all three movie, the past is the key to creating a brighter future in term of design and trust of society. It is important to understand that how far the value of design from each movie came to its value today. Helvetica a documentary about a font, begins from a different idea from other movies it begins with the idea that it’s used in everyday life, example business industries etc. it’s the font that is really simple and easy to recognize, designers are focused on how this font won’t become to mainstream. Wall-e is a movie that focused on bringing the people back to earth from space. This movie however teaches that design is powerful in different ways, in meaning that possibilities for design are endless. The story behind this movie is that we need to take advantage of new technologies to get caught up with the easier way of doing things. In the last movie Everything is Illuminated, Jonathan shows the importance of little things in life when he uses something as small as old picture of the person that saved his grandpa.

All three movie demonstrate different ways of how our past depends on some things in life, like new technology that continues to improve. Possibilities that one font can change the whole view we have on the names of things. The other being a children’s movie, and last but not least being a story of a Jewish boy. After examining the design in all those movies, it is easy to see the common lesson we learned in class that everything around us is designed. Time is the most important essence and it is important to live the present and appreciate the past when it comes to having a bright future just like in those movies.
